Bill 32 — Electoral Boundaries Commission Amendment Act, 2026 Introduced by the Minister of Justice. Amends the Electoral Boundaries Commission Act to increase the number of provincial electoral divisions from 89 to 91.

WHO GAINS POWER

  • The government gains 2 additional seats in the Legislative Assembly, expanding the total from 89 to 91 electoral divisions
  • The Electoral Boundaries Commission is directed to redraw the provincial map accordingly

WHO LOSES POWER

  • Existing electoral divisions will be redrawn — some ridings will be split, merged or redrawn, potentially affecting incumbent representation

WHO GAINS MONEY

  • Nothing directly — though additional MLAs means additional MLA salaries, office budgets and constituency funding drawn from public funds

WHO LOSES MONEY

  • Alberta taxpayers fund the additional MLA offices, salaries and the Commission's redistribution process

THE CATCH

  • ⚠️ A single line changes the seat count — no criteria, rationale or population thresholds are provided in the Bill itself for why 91 is the right number
  • ⚠️ The Commission draws the new boundaries — but the seat count is set by government before the independent process begins, shaping the outcome before the Commission starts its work
